Dental crown.

Dental crowns are cap-like structures placed on top of damaged teeth. They are beneficial in providing protection, covering, and restoring the shape of the teeth. They can be made out of metals, porcelain, resin or ceramic.

The roots of your teeth lie below the gumline. The upper part is the noticeable portion called the crown. A dental crown is a replica of your tooth’s upper layer when the natural one is damaged. These structures are cemented to provide protection and improve appearance.

When Do You Need a Dental Crown?

Compared to other dental care concerns, it is harder to determine when to get a crown. However, our dentist can help in assessing if you require one. Here are the signs that you need a crown.

Extensive Dental Fillings

When a part of a tooth is decayed, fillings are placed after the area is cleaned. In cases where the filling placement would be too deep, the remaining tooth structure would be weak and could fracture. This is the reason why crowns are placed – to preserve the tooth structure from cracks and fractures.

Broken Cusps

Have you noticed some pointy sections of your teeth? These are used for tearing apart food when you eat. They are called cusps, and sometimes they break off, which means they need a crown to shield the tooth.

Worn Teeth

Certain situations and conditions can cause excessive wear of teeth. Nighttime teeth grinding, having acid reflux, and a diet that comprises a high level of acidic foods can further wear your teeth down. Dental crowns can restore your teeth to their normal size and shape.

Root Canal Treatment

During a root canal treatment, some parts of the tooth are removed, causing the entire structure to weaken. To provide support and protection, a dental crown is often required.

Even without encountering these issues, you may still need a dental crown. This is an important reason for having regular dental checkups. During your visit, we can assess your mouth and take x-rays. We can plan out a treatment method for your oral health problems, taking into consideration your long-term dental health and your appearance.

The placement of dental crowns typically requires two visits. Our Chandler dentists can give professional recommendations when you need this procedure and explain why. They can also discuss which material is appropriate for your mouth.
