Situations that Require a Dental Emergency Visit

Woman with toothache.

Here are 5 common situations:

Severe Toothache

In cases where tooth pain is suddenly and extremely painful, it is vital to call a dentist immediately. The cause could be a bad cavity or even an abscess, and you should not wait to seek treatment.

Tooth Chips and Cracks

Teeth are designed for biting and chewing. However, some people use them to bite on objects like opening a bottle or chips. This can cause accidents like cracked and chipped teeth.

The presence of cracks and chips requires an immediate visit to the dentist. Any fragment of the tooth should not be thrown away. Preserve by placing it in a glass of milk or water and bring it along with you to your appointment.

Knocked Out Tooth

When teeth fall out because of an impact, dental emergency care is warranted. A loose tooth should be handled by keeping the tooth in its proper position until you are seen by a dentist. To manage this, you should gently bite down the tooth and hold it in place.

If your tooth has been knocked out, it is imperative to locate it – touch the upper part only. Rinse the tooth and store in a glass of milk or water and bring it with you.

Soft Tissue Injury

Parts of the mouth that are considered soft tissues:

  • Lips
  • Gums
  • Tongue
  • Inside the cheeks

Any injury to these parts should be handled by an emergency dentist or referred to the emergency room. Tears and lacerations should be rinsed with warm water and pressures should be applied to minimize bleeding.

Missing Tooth Restorations

Any restorations that fall off or become loose are considered an emergency. It’s important to bring the part that fell off.

All of the above are considered a dental emergency. When any of these happen to you or your family, call us immediately!
