Facts About TMJ

Are you experiencing any of the problems listed below? If so, give our office a call right away so we can help you get relief.

What are the symptoms of TMJ?

  • Lockjaw – your jaw getting stuck in the open or closed position
  • Clicking of your jaw when talking or chewing
  • Headaches
  • Pain in your ears
  • Pain when opening your mouth
  • Jaw muscle tenderness

What is TMJ?

The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) are located on the side of the head, linking your jaw to your skull. This enables you to chew food, close and open your mouth and speak. Any problems that concern them are referred to as TMJ disorder.

Checking for TMJ Disorders

During regular checkups, our dentists will assess the area for tenderness of the jaw muscles to check if TMJ disorder is present. However, if you are experiencing any painful symptoms, don’t wait to call us.

Since TMJ can be caused by the improper alignment of the tooth and the jaw, we may be able to offer dental treatments that will take care of the problem.

Treatment like braces and Invisalign realign the teeth and jaw in the correct position and may be the right solution. If we cannot help you we’ll refer you to a specialist.
